Problem Solving and Word Problems Whole School Essentials @ AISWA
Description
In order to solve problems in mathematics, students need to use all four Proficiency Strands (Understanding, Fluency, Problem-Solving and Reasoning) in concert. Using Polya’s Four Step Problem-Solving Process, participants will engage with a range of problem-solving strategies.
Literacy has an impact on a person’s ability to understand a problem and to describe how you solved the problem (reasoning). Developing vocabulary skills will be the major mathematical literacy focus. The literacies of Graphics and Symbols will also be explored.
The workshop will address the comprehension of word problems through cooperative learning. Practical suggestions for embedding literacy within the school numeracy plan will be provided.
