The new Curriculum places a lot of emphasis on the use of mental strategies to perform calculations.
You need this PL:
- If you’re not sure what the ‘mental strategies’ are and when to teach them,
- If your school has not clearly defined the difference between basic number facts and mental computation,
- If you’re uncertain about terms like ‘recall’, ‘rapid recall’, ‘automatic recall’, ‘automaticity’, ’fluency’ …,
- and if you do not have a year-by-year plan for teaching, practising and applying basic number facts (and beyond).

Agenda:
In this two-day PL Teachers will explore:
- The Teach-Practice-Apply approach to embedding basic number facts in their Maths Program
- The teaching of 390 basic addition subtraction, multiplication and division facts from years 1 to 4 and the subsequent opportunities for practice.
- The setting of targets and the associated monitoring tools to determine whether students reach those targets
- A planning approach to ensure the coherent development of Basic Number Facts and then mental computation across the school.
