In addition to be being used as a counter and in classification activities children love sorting the bears according to size and colour.
Children can develop measure understanding such as small, medium, and large comparisons and concepts of mass. The small bear weighs 4 grams, the medium sized bear 8 grams and the large bear 12 grams. The bears may be used with a bucket balance to develop informal understanding of balance, i.e. weighs more, weighs less, weighs the same.
