Australian Curriculum Version 9 Says:

Recognise line and rotational symmetry of shapes and create symmetrical patterns and pictures, using dynamic geometric software where appropriate.

What this means

Students understand the two types of symmetry: line symmetry and rotational symmetry. Students use this knowledge to draw pictures.

  • This is the first mention of symmetry.
  • The elaborations mention tessellations. Tessellations refer to tiling patterns.

Tips

  • Try a Google image search on the term ‘Symmetry’.
  • Many drawing apps include a ‘symmetry’ mode.
  • Tessellation can be related to area.
