Australian Curriculum Version 9 Says:

Measure and compare objects using familiar metric units of length, mass and capacity, and instruments with labelled markings.

What this means

Students need to measure using instruments such as rulers, tailor/dressmaker tapes, jugs and scales with markings.

Tips

  • Students will need to be taught how to read the different markings on the instrument and what happens when the length falls between two markings on a tape, when the arrow falls between two marks on a set of kitchen scales, or when a liquid is between two marks on the scale. This is an application of number lines in real life. Note not all tapes are labelled the same so you will need an assortment of different types.
  • Vertical scales can prove more difficult for students to read.
